Fabian Weiss was born 1986 in Ravensburg, Germany. He spent his childhood in Southern Germany, travelled around the world and moved to Vienna in 2007 for an undergraduate program in journalism and a diploma in photography. In 2011 he then moved to Denmark for a workshop based course in ‘Advanced Visual Storytelling’ at the Danish School of Media and Journalism with internationally recognised photographers like Anders Petersen and Kent Klich. In 2012 he consolidated his passion for documentary storytelling with the postgraduate program ‘Photojournalism and Documentary Photography’ at the London College of Communication. During the last year Fabian's work has been internationally recognized by some of the most prestigious institutions, including the Lucie Foundation, LUCEO, the European Publishers Award and the Ian Parry Foundation. His images have been awarded with the CNN Journalist Award, the Pride Photo Award and the Austrian Press Award. His photo series have been featured in different media including the GEO, The Sunday Times, Sunday Times Magazine, Private Photo Review and have been exhibited in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Austria, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. His projects explore the profound cultural and personal changes that occur in our contemporary world. Through subtle and intimate stories that fluctuate between daily life and struggles he likes to raise awareness for less covered issues, especially for people living on the margins of society. Searching for small and telling gestures, the sensitive and cinematic images he creates are acutely observed and nuanced portraits within a broader assessment of their surrounding culture. It is their closeness and intimacy that catch attention and create a bond between the observer and the subjects. |
