During the recent developments in Ukraine and earlier in Georgia and Moldova, Eastern European and former Soviet countries have been keeping a close eye on the moves of their big neighbor in the east. Countries with large Russian minorities, especially, fear a similar destiny and have therefore ramped up their national security.
Even though most are NATO members, not everyone completely believes the mutual promise to defend in case of aggression. The empty pledges of the past are deeply ingrained. This is why many citizens have taken the task of securing their homeland into their own hands.
Voluntary forces and national defense leagues – like the Kaitseliit in Estonia – are increasingly growing, especially in the Baltics. The lure: the recurring mantra of the Russian threat paired with national pride and the bonus of doing good deeds for the community. Like scouts but with real weapons and consequences.
